“Beasts of the Southern Wild wasn’t made with money. It wasn’t made with famous people. It was made with unadulterated love, wildness, and freedom. I want to raise a glass to everyone in this Dolby Theater and everyone watching around the world who fights for love, wildness, and freedom. But most of all I want to thank the fans of the film who have gotten behind these principles, my family who have given them to me from the day I was born, my friends who live them with me, South Louisiana who inspires me, and my producers and my crew and my cast who brought their love, their wildness, and their freedom to the film.

I raise a glass to Dwight Henry and a juice box to Quvenzhané Wallis. They embody these principles, and they have changed my life forever. They are proof that there is new talent and new inspiration out there in the world when artists are given the creative freedom to look for it.

To Court 13, I love you all. We cannot be tamed. Stay wild, stay free, why don’t we do it for Jimmy Lee?”
